Geneviève Claisse

Born on November 8, 1935, in Quiévy (Nord, France) and passing away on February 21, 2018, in Dreux, Geneviève Claisse was a major French painter of geometric abstraction and constructed art. A key figure in abstract painting during the second half of the 20th century, she developed a plastic language starting in the 1950s based on geometry, color, the line, the circle, the square, the triangle, and the relationships between forms. Her work, characterized by great formal rigor, explores phenomena of perception, balance, movement, and space, while seeking absolute autonomy of form and color. Recognized for her extremely precise compositions, she fits within the continuity of constructivism, neoplasticism, concrete art, and constructive abstraction, while asserting a deeply personal plastic style.

Coming from a family related to the painter Auguste Herbin, of whom she was the great-niece, Geneviève Claisse discovered the principles of geometric abstraction very early on. In 1958, Herbin encouraged her to pursue this artistic path and became a determining influence in her career. Self-taught, she quickly chose to devote herself exclusively to research based on the relationships between geometric forms and pure colors. Rejecting any narrative or figurative dimension, she developed a style of painting where colored surfaces seem to float, interpenetrate, or create tension within a perfectly mastered space. Her work dialogues with the research of the Bauhaus, Theo van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, and concrete art, while maintaining its own identity characterized by great freedom in chromatic combinations and visual rhythms.

Created primarily in acrylic on canvas, but also in the form of gouaches, drawings, serigraphs, sculptures, and monumental works, her creations evolved progressively toward compositions where circular forms occupy a central place. From the 1970s onward, circles, semi-circles, and disks became essential elements of her plastic vocabulary, generating optical effects, rotation, and depth that constantly renewed her approach to geometric abstraction. Her mastery of color and contrast makes her work a reference in the history of contemporary geometric painting.

Geneviève Claisse exhibited regularly in France and internationally starting in the 1960s. Among her primary solo exhibitions were those at the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam (Netherlands, 1977), the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis (1982), the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Cambrai (1993), the Musée de Sens (1999), the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes (2006), as well as the major retrospective “Geneviève Claisse. La couleur en jeu" presented at the Musée Matisse du Cateau-Cambrésis in 2018, and subsequently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Cambrai. Her work has also been featured in numerous group exhibitions dedicated to geometric abstraction, concrete art, and artists of the constructed movement in Europe.

Her works are now held in several French and international public collections, notably at the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP), the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Cambrai, the Musée de Grenoble, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, as well as in many private collections. Throughout her career, Geneviève Claisse remained faithful to a demanding research into geometry, color, visual perception, and the balance of forms, making her one of the most important representatives of French geometric abstraction and concrete art on an international level. Her work continues to be widely exhibited and studied for its essential contribution to the renewal of abstract painting, constructed art, and contemporary geometric creation.
