Rodolfo Del Castillo

Spain • 1933 - 1979

Biography

Rodolfo del Castillo, born in Astillero in 1933, studied law at the universities of Valladolid and Oviedo. In 1955, drawn by an artistic vocation, he embarked on a series of trips in Europe.

He settled in Paris, dividing his time between the capital and the Costa Azul.

He returned to Spain in 1969 and exhibited his latest works in prestigious Spanish cities.

After several years of absence, he settled permanently in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

From there, he travelled to many European cities, where he exhibited his paintings, arousing admiration from the public and critics.

His paintings are featured in important collections in Germany, France, Italy, England, the United States and Spain.

Exhibitions in Paris, Saint-Tropez, Santander, Worms, Madrid, Gijón, Bilbao and Freiburg im Breisgau.

His painting is prized for the delicacy of his line and the richness of his colors. From absolute horror to emptiness, from the smallest detail to surrealism. Art critic Mario Antolín states: "A magnificent personal style of drawing and painting, combining a boundless imagination and a knowledge of classical art that form the foundation of the angelic, graceful, and unsettling baroque of his work."

In April 1970, the painter Rodolfo del Castillo published a collection of 23 paintings at the Sala Sur in Santander.

In these works, he presents himself as the creator of a magical, delicate and poetic world.

On August 16, 1972, he exhibited for the second time at the Galería Sur a complex and symbolic work, considered to be an extraterrestrial creation.

It was in October 1978, after a six-year absence, that I wanted to exhibit in Santander, more precisely in the "Sur" room.

He considered himself a painter who, relying on the absolute freedom offered by surrealism, had managed to create his own universe, his own aesthetic reality.

He began to develop his thinking on the idea that he was eroding, through his graphics, the white surfaces that supported his themes.

His sudden death was a painful ordeal for his friends and admirers of his work.

Died in Fribourg on February 4, 1979.
