Polish-born artist excels in delicate and refined body-focused paintings, with a focus on the female figure.
Born in Poland in 1969, Ewa Hauton is a French-Polish painter whose work sensitively explores the themes of the body, movement, the female figure , and light. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland, she moved to France in 1990, where she continued her studies, earning a degree in Art Direction for Advertising. Upon her arrival, she received the Prix des Étoiles de la Peinture (Stars of Painting Award), a distinction that marked the beginning of her artistic recognition. After working as a graphic designer, visual artist, and set designer, she chose to dedicate herself entirely to contemporary painting, developing a personal universe based on emotion, gesture, and simplicity.
Ewa Hauton's work focuses on the representation of the human body , primarily the female body, viewed as an expression of breath, energy, and movement. A pivotal encounter with choreographer Evelyne Jolivet permanently steered her artistic exploration toward dance and the trace of gesture. Since then, movement has become the guiding thread of her work, giving rise to compositions where the figure seems to appear and disappear in a subtle interplay between presence and erasure.
The artist works primarily with oil, India ink , charcoal , and black chalk on paper or large-format canvas. Her creative process relies on a succession of layers, blending drawing, oil washes, erasing, and charcoal reworking to bring out the light. She favors a palette dominated by Ivory Black and Titanium White, sometimes with subtle touches of color. This chromatic economy reinforces the expressive power of her works, where shadow and light become the true subjects of the composition. The large formats allow her a broad, calligraphic gesture, executed with a calligraphy brush to preserve the fluidity and spontaneity of movement.
Her artistic world draws inspiration from dance, classical music—particularly the works of Frédéric Chopin—as well as from Pierre Soulages ' explorations of black and light and the watercolors of Auguste Rodin, whose ability to suggest movement with remarkable economy of means she admires. Poised between contemporary figuration and gestural abstraction, her portraits and silhouettes are distinguished by their emotional intensity, delicacy, and transparency.
Ewa Hauton's works are regularly exhibited in art galleries in France and Europe. She has notably exhibited at Galerie Le Cube Vernet in Avignon and Galerie Bouillon d'Art in Bordeaux, where she had a solo exhibition in 2020. Her work is currently represented by several European galleries and is included in numerous private collections. Recognized for her mastery of contemporary portraiture, figurative painting, charcoal drawing, gestural painting, and the representation of movement, Ewa Hauton develops a profoundly poetic body of work, where each stroke seeks to reveal the essence rather than simply depict reality.
