Born in 1983 - Belarus
Born in 1983 in Novopolotsk, Belarus, Kirill Smolyakov is a young photographer. He is a graduate of the University of Documentary Photography in Newport. He lives and works in Wales since 2001.
He began to photograph when he was 14. The main subject of his work is the representation of daily life and the people of his native country, Belarus. The artist has a documentary, realistic look on his characters but his work exudes a certain melancholy and intimte atmosphere. This particular point of view makes of his photographs a testimony of the migration of the youth from the ex-USSR countries, and the personal expression of a doubt.
His pictures have been exposed in Belarus, Russia or at the Center of Contemporary Art in Leeds. Kirill Smolyakov has also been selected for the Photographic Portrait Prize 2006 of the National Portrait Gallery in London where his photographs were shown in December 2006.
