Biography
Born in 1961, Alexander Donskoï is a painter originally from the south east of Russia, in the boder of China. This land of mystical origins, rich in the history of different kingdoms that have dominate it and of a reserved nature, nourishes his imagination, and is the trigger of his artistic career. During his adolescence, the artist experimented with different media, and studying the classical style on the side. When he bacame an adult, he shared his life between his studies in art history, philosophy and old cultures, in parallel to his passionate visits of the greatest museums and galleries of the world. In 1991, he moved to Canada, and currently lives in Toronto. Rich in artistic culture which he has accumulated over the years, Alexander Donskoi has developed a special interest for Flemish and surrealist painting, two influences that can be perceive in his work. Myths, history, legends and religious subjects inspire his works, where the artists does a contemporary reinterpretation. But more than a reinterpretation, it is a real proposal that the artist does: ambiguity, absurdity, disorder and sensitivity create thus his unique compositions. Alexander Donskoi is famous internationally. He has exhibited his work in Russia, Canada and China. In 1998, he was chosen to represent Canada at the international exhibition of Otaru, Japan, having "Salvador Dali and Fantastic Realism" as subject. He has not only exhibited besides the Spanish master but also besides Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, Ernst Fuchs and Hans Ruedi Giger. His work is part of public collections, particularly that of the Royal Hermitage Museum of Toronto. American, Canadian, Russian, Israeli, Swiss and Chinese collectors have acquired his paintings and drawings.
