Jorge Enrique

Born in: 1960

Jorge Enrique was born in Havana in 1960. He lives and works in Miami.

He studied at the Alfred Glassel School of Art in Houston, Texas, from 1991 to 1992.

For years, the Cuban-American artist has been wandering the the streets of Miami and collecting fingerprints on paper. His work can be situated at the crossing of painting, sculpture, print and photography.

A true urban archaeologist, he captures in his work the tension of streets and cities, of roads and walls, of fire hydrants and streetlights, and transmits them through his own eyes.

His works are made collages on wood and coated in laquer.

"Over the past twenty years, I have tried to expand the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture. I have constructed a visual vocabulary, all the while leaving aside my preconceived ideas about what these two disciplines were, or had to be.

I was trying to create works that interact with their environment to the point of becoming quasi-sculptural and, at the same time, I produced sculptures with very minimal shapes that were very elaborate from the point of view of the painting, deleting this way the limit between the two disciplines.

It is a matter of restoring the urban spirit in this overlapping of successive layers. Even more crucial is the interaction with the viewers: they are by my side in this theoretical experimentation where function follows form.

My work questions my own relationship with the architecture and the ordinary and congested setting in which we live. The audience is invited to consider the issues of urban landscapes and spaces from a new angle. In this approach, my works are not meant to be identifiable through their shape."
