After a biochemistry PhD thesis at the Pasteur Institute, Xavier went to discover large deserted spaces of the planet -- he spent a year at the Dumont d’Urville station in Antarctica (1991), followed by a trip to New Zealand (1992) as well as some time spent in Australia from 1992 to 2007. Faced with the immensity of these landscapes where man seems to be so insignificant, he begins to wonder about the place of the individual in the environment, and especially about what defines humans.
Are humans shaped by their environment or are they, before all, essentially defined by their inner life?
