  • About the artwork

    YES, the title is interesting.

Why would an artist entitle a painting NO? This is a question to be answered (differently I suspect) by each member of the audience. NO was not the original title. But as a conceptual painter I made several spontaneous markings during the creation of this work. I had originally called this painting 'Fiesta' (due to it's playful colours) however, events of the day (I suspect) at the time I painted this piece prompted me to etch out a specific word. Can you see it? And so I changed the title of this painting accordingly as it seemed fitting.

Inspired by my long time fascination with Abstract Expressionism and the freedom I experience when painting from within, NO is a statement piece. The gallery style canvas edges are painted in white for a clean finish.

For Collectors outside of North America this painting will be shipped off its stretchers and in a tube to keep shipping costs down and ensure safe delivery. Simply take the painting to your local framer to have it re stretched

Joyce Fournier

Born in: 1958

Translation in progress

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Joyce is an internationally collected Multidisciplinary Painter and Sculptor living and working in Toronto.

While her main focus is Abstract Expressionist painting, she also has a passion for sculpting and drawing the human form for which she was academically trained.

Over the last twelve years Joyce has exhibited in solo and group shows within Canada and internationally. Featured on several occasions in American Art Collector magazine since 2009, her work is found in private and public collections in Canada, the USA, and Europe.

"My paintings are Abstract Expressionist and entirely conceptual. They are bold and passionate created with conviction in response to a specific emotion or state of being. Working medium to large in size I start by randomly applying heavy bodied- Gesso to the canvas to create a geometric design. I then use this design as a template for acrylic paint application. I rarely use colour directly from the tube and prefer instead to mix my own. I feel this lends intimacy to the work. Using large brushes and / or palette knives I allow some paint to drip while scraping out various areas to reveal the under painting. My goal is to say as much as possible without having a big discussion. I want people to see what uniquely speaks to them, depending on their own situation. People see different things in my work. Movement, Colour, and Passion are words I often hear people use when they speak about my work. I have been most influenced by the great Abstract Expressionists of post World War II America. Specifically, I feel my work most resembles what one would see if Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline and Hans Hofmann had collaborated to paint something together."
