  • About the artwork

'Indifferent West'. In Indifferent West Daniel Mirer investigates today's Western American landscape. Through this project he investigates, explores and discovers sentimental representations of the mythic American Frontier.
In these photographs Mirer records tourist sites, familiar and clichéd places creating picturesque images of an 'Americana' landscape. Places that echo America's West with contemporary American Western ideals. It is here through vast blue skies and the baked arid terracotta of the land that Mirer captures the romantic, but decaying myth of this romantic landscape.

These perpetual mythic models of tourism highlight and create the outcome that the 'American West' is an idea that has become a vast region filled with elements of kitsch. They echo a space that intersects actual history alongside the comic trivialisation of fact.

Mirer's photographs represent the pedestrian and perhaps bleaker side of the tourist entertainment industry, an industry which tries to project the notions of the exotic, of the romantic and untamed hostile wilderness. The reality shows us places which can seem simply lifeless and void, places which by becoming wrapped in mythology pertain to what is known as the 'American West'.

This “Wild West” had become a place where the Lone Ranger, the Marlboro Man and the Noble Savage were invented and where they continue to reside in the unconscious collective cultural American identity.
With 'Indifferent West' Mirer re-contextualises the 'American West' from it's true reality and it's indifference to actual historical facts, re-establishing itself in the American psyche of the make-believe.

He is a frequent artist in residence, lecturer and teacher at institutions including, Regional Central American and Caribbean Contemporary Art Forum in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Tampere Polytechnic School of Art and Media in Tampere, Finland.

His series ArchitorSpace examines architecture and its interior spaces, emphasising the uneasiness one experiences in enclosed public environments.  These environments are transitional spaces, junctures between rooms and corridors; indeterminate places designed without a determined use, spaces that exist as zones of non-activity, thus leaving one open to the scrutiny of others. The hallways and corridors are areas that are particularly banal and evoke a feeling of familiarity. These sites within the images architecturally reveal no history, identity or specific functionality, yet have become so common in post-industrial society.

Daniel Mirer's work is part of Museum and Institution collections; Special Collections of the Library of University of Leiden, Leiden, Netherlands, Southeast Museum of Photography, Dallas Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas Contemporary Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Worcester Art Museum, Fidelity Investments and Ohio State University.
