  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Mami Kiyoshi is interested in personal histories: myths, stories, and anecdotes. Photography allows her to create her own narratives of the people she meets. By illustrating their personalities and their environments, she tries to make these portraits like stories of the Buddhas, primitive gods or heroes.
I photograph a variety of people who respond to my ads on the Internet, posters, etc. First, she gets to know her models and she tries to discover their personal histories, passions, likes and dislikes, their dreams. And then she begins to compose the portraits using personal objects, which she places and arranges in each picture. She enhances every portrait with her sensitivity and her imagination, which adds a fabled tone to each person’s story. The result is that the private story becomes a public narrative, which then becomes a myth of modern life.

Denis, Paris, France, 2011 : He is a photographer. He is always overflowing with ideas.

Each photograph exists in three sizes : 11.81 x 11.81 inches (5 copies), 30.78 x 30.78 inches (5 copies) and 55.11 x 55.11 inches (3 copies). Several possibilities: paper print solo or photography with floating white wood box and acrylic glass for small size or Photography laminating on Dibond 2 mm with white wood frame and museum glass for larger size. Mami Kiyoshi is an artist photographer. She was born in Japan; she lives and works in Paris. She has a degree from the Musashino Art University of Tokyo and has presented numerous exhibitions in Japan, China and Europe.

In 2010, Mami was awarded a grant from the Japanese government to pursue her New Reading Portraits series in France where she won a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. She also received the 2011 Arte/L'Art et la Ville Award, and a Special Jury Award from the Photographie.com Bourse du Talent in 2012. Her photographs are in the collections of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, Le Musée de la Ville de St Quentin en Yvelines, and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris.

Since 2003, Mami Kiyoshi has been working on New Reading Portraits, her unique project that aspires to be progressive and collaborative. Started in Japan and then in Europe, it's a lifelong work that she continues all around the world. She selects objects telling personal stories of the people she photographs and she stages them at home or at work. Much more than a simple representation of characters, the portraits are, at the same time, social, documentary and aesthetic.
