This Is Fabric (Lip Series No 1)

Part of the 'This Is Fabric' Sculpture for the Xerxes Sculpture Prize ‘This Is Fabric' 2015
‘This Is Fabric’ not only aims to explore the interaction between space and architecture, but to further examine the relationship between structure and it originally inspiration; the beautiful human body.

Through the juxtaposition of space, physicality and materiality, I wanted to elevate and heighten our experience and interaction with the materials, through composition and nuances of transformation. With ‘This is Fabric’ it felt crucial to the work, that I not only explored the way in which structural materials interact with form but to broach the void between function and aesthetic.

My practice has always drawn me toward industrial materials and this consistently informs the manual and physical way in which I interact with my sculptures. I feel this way of working is inherent to the history of structure and built form and thus I wanted to explore a way of translating this relationship and energy onto into ‘This is Fabric’. In addition to this I wanted the work to not only explore the quality and beauty of the materials used in their own right, but in turn, to allow their transformation to ultimately question the parameters of 2D and 3D within sculpture and architecture.

Claire Luxton

United Kingdom

Claire Luxton is a British painter.

She practices different mediums such as painting, photography, sculpture or installations on a large scale, it is mostly by the choice of colors that the works of Claire Luxton stand out. Using a palette of colors mostly pop and acidulated, tending mostly to mauves and roses, her work emanates a great dynamic energy.

Fascinated by the qualities and properties of the materials she uses, she is interested in the way they physically occupy space. The paintings and sculptures she creates have a very direct symbiotic relationship with photography, usually focused on transition and transformation.

Woman remains one of her favorite subjects and she uses the female body for her photographs, their bodies as well as their faces, the mouth, which she depicts in a sensual or provocative way.

Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions including at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 2015, and she won the Xerxes Award for sculpture the same year.
