Biographie
Michael James O'Brien est photographe, enseignant, conservateur, poète et activiste
Actuellement basé à Atlanta, GA. Il a eu des expositions personnelles à New York, Paris, Pékin, Hong Kong, Anvers, Istanbul, Liverpool et Savannah GA. en plus d'avoir travaillé dans la collection permanente de la National Portrait Gallery de Londres. Son travail a été présenté dans des publications telles que Rolling Stone, Vogue UK, The New Yorker, GQ, Eyemazing, Black & White Photography UK, The Guardian, The Financial Times, entre autres. Il a été rédacteur en chef de Verbal Abuse, le zine de poésie, ainsi que rédacteur en chef collaborateur du magazine Departures.
Son livre Petite amie ; Men, Women, and Drag, avec un texte de Holly Brubach, a été publié par Random House en anglais, français et japonais en 2000.
De 1900 à 2000, il a réalisé toutes les photographies pour le Drawing Restraint 7 de Matthew Barney ainsi que pour Cremaster 1,2,4 & 5 qui ont été exposés dans le monde entier.
Pendant plus de 20 ans, O'Brien a été membre d'ACTUP ainsi que bénévole pour GMHC et Terrence Higgins Trust UK. Il a été co-producteur du Love Ball à New York et à Paris, qui au fil des ans a collecté plus de 3 millions de dollars pour les personnes vivant avec le VIH/sida.
Il a été directeur créatif de DAA/Designers Against Aids en 2011-12 et a produit la campagne Live Positive pour l'organisation flamande de sensibilisation au VIH, SENSOA en 2013.
O'Brien est basé à Atlanta où il est titulaire de la chaire de photographie au Savannah College of Art and Design/SCAD.
Il est actuellement président du conseil consultatif d'Atlanta Celebrates Photography.
