Biography
Toshimitsu Imai is a Japanese artist; he was born in Kyoto in 1928 and died in 2002. His work bridges abstraction and Japanese sensibility.
He was accepted at the Tokyo Arts Academy in 1948. In 1951 he was awarded the Kansai-Shinseisaku and in 1952 he received the prize of the 5th Shinseisaku Salon. In 1952, he moved to Paris and joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Sorbonne to study Medieval History and Philosophy.
In 1953 and 1954 he exhibited his works in Paris at the Salon de l'Art Sacré (Religious Art Salon). He becomes friends with art critic Michel Tapié who influences his work, and he switches from Fauvism to abstraction. However, figurative motifs, poetry and text and remain present in his work.
