This captivating work, a winter landscape painting, masterfully illustrates the tranquility and beauty of a snow-covered village. The artist has captured each detail with remarkable precision, from the snowy rooftops to the bare trees, creating an incredibly realistic and immersive scene. The landscape is dominated by large buildings with snow-covered roofs, aligned along a winding path that guides the viewer’s gaze across the canvas. The subtle gradations of the cloudy sky add depth and atmospheric nuance to the composition. The bluish shadows on the snow and the reflections of morning or afternoon light demonstrate an impressive mastery of light and shadow. It is clear that the artist has a profound understanding of nature and its seasonal variations. The trees, though swayed by the cold, stand majestically, bringing a sense of life and movement to an otherwise serene scene. The mix of textures between the thatched roofs, snowy ground, and bare branches offers visual richness, inviting the viewer to linger on each detail. The color palette, dominated by cool tones yet softened by warm touches, hints at the warmth of homes hidden behind the imposing walls. This juxtaposition of exterior cold and interior warmth creates an intriguing emotional tension, making this painting not only beautiful to look at but also deeply emotive and connected to human experience. In sum, this work does more than depict a winter landscape; it invites the viewer into a scene where every element tells a story of bygone times, timeless nature, and the serenity synonymous with rural winter scenes. It is a true homage to the immutable beauty of nature and the artistic skill of its creator.
Originally a businessman with artistic inclinations, he did not begin formal training in painting until 1964.
Inspired by Impressionism, he devoted himself primarily to landscape painting. In the early 1970s, he worked as a painter, and his solo exhibitions throughout the 1970s and 1980s attracted considerable interest.
Later, there was a shift in his work. Through various experiments, he explored the microscopic world of brushstrokes and color structures using macrophotography, bringing these discoveries back to the large canvas. Works from this period were included in an exhibition in Basel in 1978. At the same time, he continued to create landscapes, which were presented in separate exhibitions.
Over the two decades, his non-representational painting evolved towards symmetry. Between 1992 and 2011, Markus Jenzer and his wife lived in the Lake Geneva region, where much of his symmetrical work was created, to which he now dedicated himself exclusively.
The meditative character of these images and their meticulous development required a high level of concentration and introspection. To date, only a small portion of his significant later works has been made available to the public.
