Aurélie Salvaing

Born in 1971, Aurélie Salvaing trained as a lawyer and worked in the legal field for more than 15 years. In 2012, she decided to give up everything and devote herself exclusively to art and painting. She lives and works in Montpellier.

“I work on “the other infinitely other" (Levinas) the seriality and the rewriting of the existing make it possible to illustrate this otherness. The accent is thus placed, initially, on the pictorial components, on the plastic syntax of each work. The portraits represent, in their succession, a progressive itinerary between transparency and opacity towards the depths of our humanity. by the assumed use of the palimpsest which will disturb the representation. But make no mistake, it's not just a technical rewriting process. The very definition of the palimpsest gives it a double status; it is both oblivion and memory, trace of a disappearance and bearer of a new creation. This negotiation of the repeated line with the fragilities and variations of the supports makes it possible to grasp the thousand and one shades of the soul and if the references are historical, the questions asked are still relevant. »
