Biography

Roland Chanconnier, know as Chanco, was born in 1914 in the Indre-et-Loire department. As soon as 1930, he settled in Paris where he goes out with other artists of the Butte: Utrillo, Gen Paul, Picasso... In 1947, he finally leaves the capital for the South of France.

In Antibes, Roland Chaco meets up with Picasso, but also Cocteau, Eluard or even Miro. His pictorial researches of the time led him to a new style, his "black period", where he stages characters in a black background or in dark colors. During the 50's, the artist is interested in abstract art and enhances his paintings with collages and diverse materials. In 1960, he ends up destroying almost all his artworks, as a way of making a clean slate of the past.

From 1961 to 1975, he evolves in his "kaleidoscopic" period where geometrical figures and expressionist compositions dominate his canvases. This so unusual style that characterizes him and his colorist talent make him an artist recognizable from all other.
