Renske van der Wal

I am Renske van der Wal. I am what you call an emerging artist, originally from Utrecht in the Netherlands. As you can see in this exhibition, my paintings are bold and colorful statements, full of movement and contrast.

In my development as an artist, I have experimented with many different styles, materials and techniques. For example, I have painted large landscapes in oil pastel, nudes in ink on large paper, and portraits of mothers with newborns in charcoal.

However, at the center of all these paintings there has always been abstract art. This is how I express myself in the most 'direct' way, the rawest possible. I integrate all the materials and techniques that I have practiced. I often use recycled materials, such as wood panels. Their character (rough, smooth, dark, light) is an important part of the work.

You could compare these paintings to an old-fashioned slideshow, projecting little squares of what's going on inside me onto large canvases. What it “means", or what it means for me, remains hidden, often for me too. There are no titles, the viewer is completely free to see or interpret what they want. Their creativity in interpretation is an amazing part of being an artist!
