Presentation

The practice of Katia Kameli, a Franco-Algerian artist and director, is based on a research approach: historical and cultural facts fuel the plural forms of her plastic and poetic imagination. She considers herself a “translator”. Translation is not a simple passage between two cultures nor a simple act of transmission, but also functions as an extension of meaning and forms. The act of translation deconstructs the binary and sometimes hierarchical relationship between the notion of original and copy. A rewriting of stories appears within his work. It highlights a global history made up of porous borders and reciprocal influences in order to open a reflective path that generates a critical look at the world.

Katia Kameli graduated from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Bourges and followed the Collège-Invisible post-diploma at the École Supérieure d'Arts in Marseille. His work has found visibility and recognition on the international art and cinema scene and has been shown in solo exhibitions: The Song of the Birds , Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen Gallery, Stuttgart (2023); The Song of the Birds , Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen Gallery, Berlin (2023); Yesterday returns and I hear it , Institute of Islamic Cultures, Paris (2023); Yesterday returns and I hear it , Bétonsalon - art and research center, Paris (2023); The Song of the Birds , Le Domaine du Rayol - Le Jardin des Méditerranées, Rayol (2022); The Song of the Birds , Le Domaine du Rayol - Le Jardin des Méditerranées, La Criée, Rennes (2022); She turned on the past , FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Marseille (2021); The Algerian Novel , Kalmar Konstmuseum, Kalmar (2020); She Rekindled the vividness of the past , Kunsthalle Münster, Münster (2019); In the shadow of the star and the crescent , Hauts-de-France Regional Photography Center, Douchy-les-Mines (2018); Stream of Stories, chapter 5 , Biennale de Rennes (2016); What Language Do You Speak Stranger? , The Mosaic

Rooms, London (2016); Taymour Grahne Gallery, New York (2014). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions: Archeology of Resistance: Corrective for the Future , Kulturni centar Beograda, Belgrade, Serbia (2024); Archeology of Resistance , City of Women Festival, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2023); Dakar Biennale (2018); Rennes Biennale, (2018); Platforma Festival, Newcastle, (2017); Global Players, Biennale für aktuelle fotografie Kunst-verein Ludwigshafen, Mannheim (2017); Dear Friends , Center Pompidou, Paris (2016); Made in Algeria , Mucem, Marseille (2016); Entry Prohibited to Foreigners , Havre Magasinet, Boden, Sweden (2015); Higher Atlas , Marrakech Biennale (2012). His films have also been shown in theaters and at numerous festivals: MK2 Beaubourg, Cinémathèque française, Utopia Bordeaux, Cinemed, Gulbenkian, IFFR Rotterdam.

Nominated for the AWARE prize and winner of the Les Mondes Nouveaux program in 2022, her works are part of a number of public collections including the following: National Museum of Modern Art / Center Georges Pompidou (Paris), CNAP, Center National des Arts Plastiques (Paris), FRAC Hauts-de-France (Dunkirk), FRAC Poitou-Charentes (Angoulême) and FRAC PACA (Marseille), BPS22 (Charleroi).
