Biography
Tadeusz Kantor was born on 6 April 1915 in Wielopole Skrzyskie, a tiny village in Galicia south of Ropczyce and Sidziszów Malopolski. He studied painting and scenography at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. He began his career with experimental theatre Grupa Krakowska, of which he was co-founder.
During the Hitler occupation, he founded the Independent Theatre in Krakow (Teatr Niezaleny). In 1947, he stayed in Paris where he was the relay in Poland of French cultural life.
Tadeusz Kantor's greatest triumphs came with the premiere of The Dead Class (Umara klasa, 1975), a story about the fugitive and the permanent.
He died suddenly on December 8, 1990 in Cracow, after a rehearsal session. He is buried in Rakowicki Cemetery.
