Biography

John Hoyland (1934-2011) was a prominent British abstract painter known for his vibrant and expressive works. 

Born in Sheffield, England, Hoyland studied at the Sheffield School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. He emerged as a leading figure in the British abstract art movement during the 1960s and became associated with the New Generation movement.

Hoyland's paintings are characterized by bold, intense colors and dynamic compositions. He explored the boundaries of abstraction, often using large canvases to create powerful and immersive experiences for viewers. 

Throughout his career, Hoyland exhibited extensively both in the United Kingdom and internationally, with notable shows at the Tate Gallery, the Royal Academy, and the Serpentine Gallery. His work continues to be celebrated for its energetic and emotive qualities, solidifying his place as a significant figure in contemporary British art.
