Biography

Gene Colan, born in the Bronx in New York on September 1, 1926 and died on June 23, 2011 in the same borough of New York City1, is a cartoonist of the Golden Age of comics.Gene's strong impression on the world of comics has lasted for many years. Not only is he closely associated with popular characters such as Daredevil, Batman, Captain America, Dracula, Iron Man, Captain Marvel I, Howard the Duck, Wonder Woman, Sub-Mariner and many others, but he has also worked on comics of other genres: romance, war, crime/detective, western, sci-fi, horror, humor. In each of these genres, Gene has been highly acclaimed by the public. His drawing style is original and unique - he does not copy, but relies entirely on his own very fertile imagination. His style is immediately recognizable by its cinematic, dramatic and fast form; its mastery of light and shadow; the expression and construction of his characters; and finally, an unusual sense of space. Gene is also at the origin of the innovative use of finished pencils as a drawing style. He is the only artist today whose work is often published directly from his own pencil drawings.
