Biography

Lowell Nesbitt (1933 -1993) is a key figure of American art. An American painter but also draftsman, engraver and sculptor. He graduated from the Tyler art school at Philadelphia University, in Pennsylvania and Royal Academy of Arts in London. During his studies, he created several works with stained glass and engravings. He shared an artist studio on West 14th Street with Ian Hornak, the artist. Then he opened his very own studio of 1160m2,on the same street with a swimming pool and this became a unifying spot for key personalities of the art world. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Larry Rivers spent time at his place and called it the "old stable". This major place triggered a lot of hustle and bustle from the press, as testified by illustrious artists in New York Times, Washington post and Architectural Digest Magazine.

During his career, Lowell Nesbitt took turns between abstract paintings and a more realistic style. He was wrongly related to "realistic photo" . The artist used a protean technique and took on painting, drawings and etching. He was one of the first to use X-rays through his characters, or to put together his illustrations with computer parts. He juggles with materials and time periods such as: neoclassical facades, 19th century buildings, Victorian staircases ...fold up in his paintings.

In 1958, Baltimore Art Museum contributed to his first retrospective. His personal exhibitions are booming in galleries and museums (Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia ...). His work has been acquired by several renowned places such as The Art Institute of Chicago, Baltimore Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts , Israel Museum, National Art Gallery...Various books and catalogs have devoted a study to Lowell Blair Nesbitt.
