We are beings who cannot be fully described by a single role or a single word.
Within our families, we may be someone’s daughter, partner, parent, or sibling. At work, we may act as professionals. At times, society may define us through labels such as “woman,” “artist,” or “contemporary artist.” Yet none of these words can encompass all that we are.
Within us, conflicting emotions and values coexist. We move between the roles expected of us by society and our own inner realities, living each day in a state of constant movement and negotiation. This fluidity is not a sign of contradiction or incompleteness. Rather, it is what shapes the uniqueness of each individual.
Creation is not simply about bringing something new into existence. It is also an ongoing process of questioning established values and the contours of our own identities—sometimes even breaking them apart—in order to transform ourselves into something new. This process takes place not only within artworks, but also continuously within the identities of the artists who create them.
In Our Plural Selves, through the works of Sakurako Hamaguchi, we turn our attention to the complexity inherent in being human, and to the richness that emerges from it.
When we stand before an artwork, what is reflected there may not be the artist alone. We may also encounter the unspoken emotions within ourselves, and the many different versions of “I” that coexist within us.
We hope this exhibition offers an opportunity to listen closely to the multiple voices within each of us, and to reconsider what it means to be true to oneself.
