Rob Gonsalves

Born on June 25, 1959 in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and died on June 14, 2017, Rob Gonsalves is a Canadian painter recognized internationally for his works of magical realism which play with perception and optical illusions. Through a body of work situated at the intersection of surrealist painting, illusionism and fantasy art, he creates images where several realities coexist in the same scene. His paintings, with great technical precision, invite the viewer to question their perception by gradually discovering visual transformations where landscapes, architectures, and characters naturally metamorphose into one another. Although his work is often close to surrealism, Rob Gonsalves preferred to describe his approach as magical realism, believing that his works did not represent impossible scenes, but worlds where the imagination unfolds from a credible reality.

From his childhood, Rob Gonsalves showed a marked interest in drawing, architecture, and the representation of space. Fascinated by the imaginary perspectives of M. C. Escher, the poetic universes of René Magritte and the metaphysical landscapes of Yves Tanguy, he developed a fascination very early on for perspective games and visual illusions. After studies in architecture, he briefly worked as an architect while also creating theater sets and murals. This experience has permanently influenced his work, where the mastery of perspective, light, and spatial constructions becomes one of the foundations of his artistic language.

Starting in the 1990s, Rob Gonsalves dedicated himself entirely to painting. Mainly executed in oil on canvas, his works stage imperceptible transitions between two distinct universes: a city becomes a forest, sailboats transform into clouds, books become buildings, or children build a landscape that extends into reality. The artist constructs each composition with extreme precision so that these metamorphoses appear fluid and natural.
