Susanne Wellm

A 1995 graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture, Design and Conservation, she has explored a wide range of photographic techniques, both analog and digital, often using them artistically in a fused form. Exploring the physical qualities of the two-dimensional image, she has recently developed a method combining photography and weaving, adding complex and tactile layers of color, contrast, and depth to the expression of the pieces.

A recurring theme in Wellm's practice is her interest in time, memory, and narrative construction. Drawing on a vast archive of images found in old family albums, historical film stills, and original captures, Wellm traces connections between the personal dramas of everyday life and the collective history and traumas of modern Europe. Through the use of collage and montage, she assembles familiar and often humble sections of reality into poetic, multi-layered pictorial spaces where fiction and fact, stagnation and movement, interior and exterior merge in significant moments, cinematically retracing an action while remaining open to interpretation.

Susanne Wellm's work is widely exhibited, both nationally and internationally. Her works are represented in several important collections, including the Danish Arts Foundation, the New Carlsberg Foundation, the Royal Library's National Photo Collection, the Art Museum Brandts, the Vejle Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, and the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts.
