Biography

Gérard Couinet has developed a distinctive body of work that straddles the boundary between painting and sculpture. His work is characterised by the presence of human figures rendered in bas-relief on canvas or wooden supports, thereby creating a subtle dialogue between the pictorial surface and three-dimensional form.

In these compositions, the human figure takes centre stage. Often stylised, sometimes reduced to the essentials, these silhouettes emerge from the surface as if seeking to leave the flat plane and enter real space. This relief effect lends the work a physical and sensory dimension, reinforced by the presence of the subject. Gérard Couinet's technical process involves collaging modelled and sculpted forms, creating reliefs that inhabit the surface. The canvas or wood thus becomes a veritable field of artistic experimentation where material, texture and volume converge. The play of light and shadow produced by the relief plays a full part in the composition and gives the figures an almost sculptural presence. His works often evoke fragments of humanity: isolated silhouettes, discreet presences or stylised groups that seem to engage in a silent dialogue with the space.

Gérard Couinet's work also invites the viewer to look beyond a simple frontal reading of the image. By introducing relief into the pictorial surface, he transforms the canvas into a territory of presence.
