Pierre Hennebelle

France • 1926 - 2013

A key figure in the northern art scene, Pierre Hennebelle devoted his life to demanding artistic research, evolving on the borders of figuration and abstraction.

Biography

Born on August 1, 1926, in Croix, and died on August 17, 2013, in Wasquehal, in northern France, Pierre Hennebelle was distinguished by a dual artistic sensibility:

The Painter: A key figure in the northern art scene, he dedicated his life to a demanding artistic exploration, working at the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

The Musician: Alongside his painting, Hennebelle was a renowned jazz pianist. This passion for jazz—a music of structure but also of improvisation—profoundly influenced his work on canvas, shaping the rhythm of his compositions and the spontaneity of his brushstrokes.

Hennebelle did not work in isolation. He was part of major collectives that revitalized modern art in northern France:

The Roubaix Group: He was one of the key figures in this gathering of artists, alongside renowned names such as Eugène Leroy, Eugène Dodeigne, and Arthur Van Hecke. This group was characterized by complete freedom of expression, far removed from Parisian academicism.

The Atelier de la Monnaie: Based in Lille, this collective (active between 1957 and 1972), of which he was an active member, sought to open the region to avant-garde and contemporary art.

Pierre Hennebelle's style is often characterized by rich, textured paintwork,

An allusive figuration: His landscapes, seascapes, and horizons (such as his views of the French Riviera or Hendaye) tend toward a sense of simplification. The figurative element often fades into the background, giving way to colorful and atmospheric emotion.

Knife work and impasto: He liked to sculpt the paint directly onto the support. His works play with light through pronounced reliefs, superimposed layers, and an alternation of muted tones (grayish blues, ochres) enhanced by bursts of light or brighter colors (whites, pinks, deep blues).

Recognized by his peers and institutions, Pierre Hennebelle exhibited regularly in national salons (such as the one in Paris in the 1960s). Today, his works are held in several art museums in Northern France, including:

La Piscine (André Diligent Museum of Art and Industry) in Roubaix.

The MUba Eugène Leroy in Tourcoing.

The Touquet-Paris-Plage Museum.

He is an artist whose work remains very attractive to collectors who appreciate modern, textured, vibrant painting imbued with timeless poetry.
