Marie-Gaelle Moldo

Marie-Gaëlle Moldo, born in 1972 in Strasbourg, is a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse. Her works have already been exhibited at numerous exhibitions around the world: St-Art in Strasbourg, Art Karlsruhe, Salon du blanc in Tokyo, Art Paris, as well as at Editions Bucciali, the CRAC d'Altkirch, and the Museum of Fine Arts of Mulhouse.

Her work can be linked to various artistic movements: to brut art and naive art through the repetitive representation of motifs and themes, as well as to expressionism through subjectivity and the distortion of the line, or to symbolism which translates her spiritual and irrational search. "My artistic work questions the notions of imagination, intimacy, existence, and identity. I take my face and objects that I love as models to reinvent them in a dreamlike composition, a marvelous microcosm in which faces and objects each have their own existence. The scale of the objects and faces is not realistic, creating a displacement. The objects are living beings, the faces are treated as objects. Their status is uncertain. I question the identity and the power of these elements that I stage. Who has more power or more existence? The background that is inspired by repeated and reinterpreted textile motifs in a tenacious way, or the face, or the objects, and how are they linked to each other? Inspired by a rich and varied cultural universe that brings together filmmakers who take her on journeys "to the end of the world" with "The wings of desire" (Wim Wenders) in poetically shifted universes (Tim Burton), New Wave musicians with a husky baritone voice (Joy division, Nick Cave...), or singer-songwriters (Serge Gainsbourg, Miossec...), ancient, modern, and contemporary artists (Odilon Redon, Giotto...), Marie-Gaëlle Moldo translates this cultural effervescence in these works.

Her art explores the color she associates with the line which is the basis of the impulse of a drawing, "so that they juxtapose and overlap (...)". Color becomes "enveloping, carnal surface." She uses it to explore her conscious and unconscious thought. "In the practice of ink, the notions of appearance or disappearance are essential: the paper absorbs the ink, the ink can be absorbed by the paper. With it, I fight against erasure, the possibility that the line or the surface exists more or less. I make the line waver with shimmering or refreshing colors, sometimes discreetly or imposing."
