French sculptor specializing in figurative work with a focus on effort and work.

Biography

Cécile Thonus is a French sculptor. She studied ceramics at ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres (France's national school for the decorative arts), then at the Université Panthéon Sorbonne, where she discovered sculpture. Since then, she has lived and worked in Malakoff, south-west of Paris.

After her studies, Cécile Thonus moved towards conceptual art, but gradually abandoned this in favour of more figurative work. She essentially works in wood, but mixes it with other materials: resin, earth, metal, plaster, etc. It depends on how she feels! She tries to re-use materials wherever possible, for example re-using old beams to create her playful sculptures.
Her work usually represents small people, statuettes with no identity, that climb or clamber up mountains. More than ever before, the central themes of her work are based around ideas about effort and work.

Cécile Thonus exhibits regularly in France, as well as abroad.
