Whether he pencils for 35 hours, creates a structure of production for his artworks kit, takes on the unionists and militant's history in the French city of Besançon, reassesses modern architecture’s utopias or deploys a sculptural work marked by construction site aesthetics, Benjamin Sabatier regularly questions the concept of work, which is used as a benchmark in his approach that seeks above all to include art in a larger social and economic context.
His artistic vocabulary is made of raw and easy-to-reach materials: Brick, concrete, do-it-yourself tools, cardboard, scotch, etc. that he employs in the context of understandable manufacturing processes, evacuating any reference a heroic gesture of the sculptor, in favor of a certain literality in which the functionning of the artwork reveals itself at first glance. This very direct "outburst", which nevertheless remains polysemous, makes it easy and possible for it to be reproduced by everyone.
Between political and formal issues, rereadings of the constructivist principles and thesis of Walter Benjamin, Benjamin Sabatier's work, by inviting the viewer to become a producer himself, is to be considered in the light of the alternative and emancipatory theories of Do-It-Yourself.
