François Bonnel (born 1968) is a French contemporary artist and abstract painter living and working in Toulouse. His work falls within the field of contemporary abstraction, where color, line, geometric form, visual rhythm, and composition occupy a central place. After spending nearly twenty-five years as an executive in the advertising sector, he decided in 2018-2019 to devote himself entirely to painting and photography, developing an artistic practice based on spontaneity, experimentation, and the joy of creation.
François Bonnel's work is characterized by an intuitive and improvised approach. He explores various techniques and combines acrylic, collage, photography, and digital media to build a personal plastic language. His compositions combine large areas of flat color, delicate lines, and geometric shapes that dialogue in a subtle balance between tension and harmony. The artist advocates for a painting liberated from any narrative or conceptual demonstration: in his own words, painting is above all "pure pleasure." This approach gives rise to works where emotions emerge from the encounter between color, space, and gesture.
Music constitutes an essential source of inspiration in his creative process. Many works bear the titles of songs or artists that accompany their creation, reflecting a desire to transcribe musical sensations into a pictorial language. This rhythmic dimension gives his work an immediately recognizable identity within contemporary abstract painting.
Since the beginning of his professional career as an artist, François Bonnel has exhibited regularly in France and internationally. Among his primary solo exhibitions are "La Part Belle" at the Lanoue Gallery in Boston (2024), "Summer Memories" at FORWART + MACADAM in Brussels (2023), "Intersection" at FORWART + MACADAM (2022), "Les Beaux Jours" at the Cheryl Hazan Gallery in New York (2023), as well as several solo exhibitions at the Macadam Gallery in Brussels (2022 and 2025). His work has also been presented in group exhibitions and international fairs such as Art Miami, Art Taipei, AAF Brussels, Kunstrai Amsterdam, and Bluerider Gallery in Taipei, Shanghai, and London.
François Bonnel's works are now featured in several prestigious permanent collections, notably those of the Harvard Art Museum, Louis Vuitton, L'Oréal, Longchamp, and the Bellagio. Thanks to his singular plastic vocabulary, based on the balance of forms, the vibration of color, and the constant influence of music, François Bonnel has established himself as a recognized figure in contemporary French abstract painting.
