Michel Bassompierre

Michel Bassompierre (1948–2026) was a French animal sculptor recognized as one of the major figures of contemporary sculpture. Born in Paris on March 22, 1948, with an artist mother and a scientist father, he developed a fascination very early on for drawing, modeling, and the animal world. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen under the sculptor René Leleu, he dedicated more than fifty years of his career to exploring the representation of animals, becoming one of the last great masters of animal sculpture.

His work was distinguished by clean forms, soft curves, and a constant search for the balance between power and tenderness. Working mainly in bronze, but also in marble and alabaster, Michel Bassompierre was inspired by emblematic animals such as bears, gorillas, elephants, horses, seals, walruses, or lions. Far from a naturalist approach, he favored a contemporary interpretation of volumes, where light envelops the forms without ever breaking their harmony. His work, often close to that of François Pompon and influenced by Auguste Rodin, expressed a deep sensitivity towards the wild world and biodiversity.

Awarded numerous times, Michel Bassompierre notably received the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français (1998), the Grand Prix du Salon des Artistes Français (1990), the Grand Prix du Salon National des Artistes Animaliers (1989), the Taylor Foundation Prize (1988), the François Pompon Prize (2017), the Special Award of the Society of Animal Artists (2018), was promoted to Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (2025) and then Knight of the Legion of Honour (2026).

His sculptures were presented in numerous personal exhibitions and monumental installations in France and internationally, notably in New York with Fragile Giants on Park Avenue (2025-2026), at the Plaza Athénée in Paris (2026), at the Centro de Arte Contemporânea Graça Morais in Bragança, Portugal (2026), in Crans-Montana, Marrakech, Monaco, Brussels, Saint-Tropez, Saint-Malo, Chamonix, Le Castellet, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Beauval, or Caen. His monumental works are now integrated into numerous private collections, public spaces, museums, and foundations around the world, making him an essential reference for monumental sculpture and contemporary animal art.

Through his creations, Michel Bassompierre defended a deeply humanistic vision of nature. By simplifying forms to the essential, he revealed the nobility, serenity, and fragility of living things, inviting the viewer to take a renewed look at animal species and their preservation. His work remains an international reference for bronze sculpture, contemporary sculpture, and animal art, celebrated for its timeless elegance and emotional power.

Michel Bassompierre died on April 21, 2026, in Nantes, at the age of 78, following a malaise that led to a fall. His passing prompted many tributes from the art world and French institutions. His team and family continue to disseminate his work, which continues to shine through international exhibitions and monumental installations, perpetuating his commitment to the protection of living things and biodiversity.
