In the light of the Masters…
For lovers of art history, Gaëlle Wagner's work is part of the continuity of the great explorations of abstraction, from Monet to Klimt, from Pollock to Rothko. Nourished by this heritage, she develops a singular pictorial language, where composition, material, and color open up a renewed view of the sensible world.
In the Concrete Abstractions of Gaëlle Wagner, each work is born from a rigorously constructed composition made up of photographic fragments. This structure constitutes the foundation upon which the artist builds to develop her work. She progressively superimposes projections and runs to enrich the pictorial surface and gradually give it density. The artist conducts a deep reflection on pigment, color, light, and their interactions. Gravity and natural phenomena, which might seem to guide the painting, are integrated into this process without ever taking precedence over the artist's will.
Because, for Gaëlle Wagner, it is above all about building, through her technique, a sensory experience. The underlying structure of the work and its progressive enrichment become the guiding thread that accompanies the viewer towards a state of presence and attention.
Her approach is inspired by the way nature organizes its own forms. In a landscape, a rock, a sky, or a sea bottom, nothing exists in isolation: each element takes meaning through the relationships it maintains with the others. It is this logic of interdependence that the artist transposes into her painting. Colors are never thought of separately; they exist one for the other, building images that evoke horizons, mineral phenomena, or aquatic depths, without ever seeking to illustrate them, but rather to bring forth the memory, the impression, or the evocation.
Up close, the eye discovers the richness of the material, the nuances and interactions between the pigments. From a distance, these elements unite into a coherent image, where each part becomes indispensable to the balance of the whole.
This double reading is at the heart of her work. It invites the viewer to a sensory experience, between abstraction and reminiscence, where what nature reveals meets what it leaves suspended. The artist always works with purpose, guiding the gaze towards what she calls a Concrete Abstraction.
Presented in many personal and collective exhibitions, Gaëlle Wagner also creates live painting performances on monumental formats. Her works are now in private collections in France, Europe, and the United States.Discover other selections of artworks
