Macha Pangilinan

Biography

Macha Pangilinan was born in 1990 in Kurgan (Russia).

In 2013, she joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow from which she graduated. A year later, she moved to Paris and now establishes her artistic creation in her studio in Poush Manifesto.

She emancipated herself from her long and studious purely academic art education, overcome by a patriarchal context, and began to experiment with the reinvention of her artistic language, laying the foundations of her world.

The objectification of the male body plays a predominant role in Macha Pangilinan's practice. For her, as a woman, it is a natural need to try to respond to the "male gaze" in Western art history.

The series entitled "The Bathers" is an alternative version of the iconic subject of women stripped naked as objects of sexualisation. Here it is the naked young men, facing the viewer, who bathe with unicorns.

These works are part of his Paradise period, which illustrates a fictional, idyllic world created from the common image of Paradise represented in the culture of monotheistic religions. Inhabited by deities and mythical beings, it is both soothing and disturbing. It is a surrealist dream where the characters are in a state of permanent transformation, disappearing and being born.

Playing with the iconic childlike imagination of little girls - unicorns, mermaids, pastel colours and glitter - Macha Pangilinan offers us a new way of reliving these gender codes, which have been imposed on us since our childhood.
