Biography

Sylvain Vigny is a French painter born in Vienna (Austria) on April 8, 1903. He moved to Nice in 1934.

He died in Nice on February 4, 1970.

Self-taught artist, coming from Austria like Willy Eisenschitz and Elfy Haindl-Lapoirie (de), “he arrived in France in 1929 and, after having experienced an adventurous life in Vienna and Paris, he discovered Nice in 1934 and settle there ". Sylvain Vigny's name remains attached to that of Jean Moulin in that, when he opened the Galerie d'Art Romanin in Nice, the artist was, with the brothers Pierre and Jacques Prévert, Nikos Papatakis, Django Reinhardt and the Nice painter Jean Cassarini, among those we meet regularly. It is from 1955 that he becomes a truly recognized figure of Nice art, as will be his friends Ben (Benjamin Vautier), Claude Morini and Bernard Damiano.
