Presentation

Chantal Montellier studied at the School of Fine Arts in Saint-Étienne, then taught plastic arts in colleges and high schools, then, from 1989 to 1993, she was a lecturer at the University of Paris VIII. She was first interested in painting (some paintings were presented at the Grand Palais in 1972).

From 1972, she produced press cartoons for left-wing periodicals. As a comic strip author, she notably participates in Charlie Mensuel, Métal Hurlant, Ah! Nana, (To be continued) and Psikopat. For Métal hurlant, she creates short stories, then collected in albums. She also works for Magnard and Gallimard editions.

His realistic drawing, often in black and white at the beginning, evolves towards an almost photographic realism. His works, which testify to his interest "for marginality and exclusion", are clearly committed.

Chantal Montellier affirms her political and feminist commitment (for example in Les Damnés de Nanterre, an investigative comic on Florence Rey.

In 2007, she co-founded with Jeanne Puchol and Marie-Jo Bonnet the Artemisia Prize which rewards each year a comic strip produced by one or more women.
