MICHEL "CREN" PIETSCH

Germany • 1970

A pioneer of Berlin graffiti and co-creator with the artist AKTE of a 3D effect in spray paint

Biography

Michel Pietsch, also known as CREN, was born in 1970 near Hanover, but has lived and worked in Berlin since 2009. Of French descent on his mother's side, he discovered Hip Hop culture in the 1980s, as well as the art of graffiti, through his travels in France. Some time later, he began sketching 2D lettering in a semi-wildstyle style. In 1989, he used spray paint for the first time. Nearly 30 years later, he has created numerous works in public spaces and exhibited his paintings in 14 countries across three continents.

Lettering, Pop Art figuration, and informal art blend in Cren's work. This crossover reflects a desire to achieve harmonious, balanced image compositions using diverse forms, styles, and colors, without ever abandoning lettering and its distinctive writing style. Cren's style is unique and recognizable; his compositions invite us to patiently decipher the complexity of his art.
