Biography

Winfred Gaul, 1928-2003, is a German Informal artist and painter active in Analytical painting.

Born in Düsseldorf, Gaul spent his childhood and youth in East Prussia, from 1931 to 1944, after his father, a teacher, was transferred there. In 1944, shortly before the end of the war, he was enlisted as a soldier at the age of 16 and sent to the Eastern Front.

Active as a painter since the 1950s, he held his first solo exhibition in 1956, Gaul obtained the initial appreciation from the public and critics for his informal works, some of which were also exhibited at "documenta 2" in Kassel in 1959.

Gaul is considered one of the German painters who have most marked the abstract research in the second half of the twentieth century.
