George Tzannes is an American artist of Greek origins. He is best known for his figurative artworks informed by some aspect of the Greek island of Kythera – objects, architecture, landscapes. “My intention is for the viewer to be a participant in the subject of my work and to create their own narrative through a personal response." His main medium is black and white Monotype or chalk and charcoal on paper.
Tzannes studied at the Art Students League in New York and lithography at Pratt. In 1971, he went to Kythera, Greece, for the first time. He was taken by the island's natural beauty and how the people there still lived connected to the land. He has been going back ever since, living part of the year on Kythera and part in New York City, with studios in both places. His work has been exhibited in the United States and in Greece.
