Hungarian painter, printmaker and sculptor Istvan Nadler was born in Visegrad. A graduate of the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he taught from 1954 to 1958, he continued his studies in painting and graphic arts until 1963. In the 1960s, he was one of the major representatives of avant-garde movement in his country and one of the founders of “L'Atelier Budapest”. He made a study trip to France, and in particular to Paris, at the invitation of the Károlyi Mihály Foundation in the mid-1960s. If at the start of the 1960s, Istvan Nadler would work in a purely geometric style, he would develop a strategy completely new creator in the following decade, privileging the gestural painting while relying on musical influences. In the 1990s, the artist became interested in oriental philosophies and created by listening to Tibetan liturgical music and traditional Japanese drums. He visits Europe (Rome, Florence, Lisbon, etc.). In 2001, a major retrospective exhibition of his work was organized at the Mucsarnok, an art gallery located opposite the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
