Célestin Messaggio

Célestin Messaggio (1921-2020) is a French painter whose work is part of the tradition of modern figurative painting, mixing post-impressionism, expressionism, and a deeply Mediterranean sensibility. Born in Marseille, he discovered drawing and painting very young before developing an essentially self-taught practice. After the Second World War, he fully dedicated himself to his artistic activity and gradually built a pictorial universe recognizable by the richness of his palette and the spontaneity of his gesture.

Inspired by the landscapes of the south of France, the Mediterranean ports, the Provençal villages, the sailors, still lifes, and flower bouquets, Célestin Messaggio creates a luminous work where color occupies a central place. Working mainly in oil on canvas, he favors a generous medium and an energetic touch that bring life to vibrant compositions.
