Giovanni Fattori

Giovanni Fattori was an Italian painter, draftsman, and aquatintist of the nineteenth century, a major figure of the Macchiaioli. Born in Livorno in 1825, he distinguished himself by his scenes of the Risorgimento military, his landscapes of Tuscany, and his portraits, using the technique of the "macchia" to play with spots of light and color. A professor at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, he created more than 180 etchings and remains a master of plein air painting.
