Presentation

Among the most important Italian sculptors of the twentieth century, Gio' Pomodoro - aka Giorgio Pomodoro - born in 1930 in Orciano di Pesaro, near Urbino. He was the brother of Arnaldo, also a well-known sculptor.

In 1955, he actively contributed to the magazine "il Gesto", together with Dorazio, Novelli, Turcato, Tancredi, Perilli, Fontana and the brother Arnaldo, participating in the exhibitions of the Group "Continuità". Following he separated from the group, directing his research towards the "rational representation of the signs".

The artistic production of Gio' Pomodoro develops from bronze reliefs of vast fluctuating surfaces that turn, in the following years, into monumental squared marble and stone constructions, where sunlight bursts through the gaps. The sun, although not shown explicitly, is the protagonist of these creations, which Pomodoro attaches significant ideological and social meanings.

The works of Pomodoro can now be found in many public spaces as well as in public and private collections around the world.

He died in 2002, aged 72, after suffering from a stroke.
