Presentation
Egle Norkute (b. 1993) is a young painter. In 2019, she earned a master's degree in painting from the Vilnius Academy of Arts. From 2016, she has been taking part in local and international exhibitions and international residency programmes, and has held several solo exhibitions. From 2019, she is a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union. She won several awards and prizes at art competitions.
Through painting, Egle Norkute explores the contexts of art history, mythology, places of memory and contemporary media. Her works are characterised by a complicated structure reminiscent of a deconstructed puzzle or objects assembled without instructions, and a chaotic layering of images. Feeling confused about contemporaneity and having doubts about the importance of an artwork, she mixes the chosen motifs, themes and images, creating unexpected tragicomic confrontations and relations of meanings. The artist's canvases are a kind of paradoxical cabinets of curiosities, kunstkammers, in which cultural and historical references, quotes of popular visual culture, global social and political issues and autobiographical reflections find place one next to another. All these elements intertwine to create subjective narratives, and the viewer gets involved in their recontextualisation through recognisable motifs.
