Joseph Christian Ekeomobong

Joseph Christian Ekom-Obong is a Nigerian-born (1993) professional expressionist artist specializing in painting and drawing. He is an indigene of Itu Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, and was born and raised in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

He holds a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Fine and Applied Arts from the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, and a Bachelor's degree in Fine and Industrial Arts from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He currently lives and works full-time as an artist in Lagos, Nigeria.

Joseph's work is deeply inspired by themes surrounding African identity, particularly the marginalization faced by Africans due to their skin color, while also celebrating the beauty, resilience, rich history, and diverse cultural heritage of the continent. His art challenges perceptions by reinforcing the idea that “black is beautiful," using vibrant colors to accentuate darker skin tones while also portraying the scars, struggles, and lived experiences of Black individuals.

Drawing from childhood memories, personal experiences, and environmental influences, he creates emotionally resonant works that balance aesthetics with powerful social commentary.

Working across canvas and card, Joseph employs acrylic, oil paint, and charcoal, often incorporating traditional African symbols such as Uli, Nsibidi, and Adinkra. These elements help him communicate deeper cultural narratives while preserving and promoting African heritage.

His artistic vision is to create works that are visually compelling yet thought-provoking pieces that speak for the African community and highlight the significance and uniqueness of traditional African symbolism.
