Biography

V. Yakovlev (1934–1998) was a self-taught artist, despite growing up in an environment closely connected to the art world. Exposure to Tachism from 1957 onwards inspired him to develop his own distinctive style. He organized his first exhibitions jointly with E. Shtejnberg (1963, 1968). From the 1970s onwards, his often tragically expressive paintings were also shown at international exhibitions; he was represented by multiple works at major exhibitions of Soviet nonconformist art in Germany. His works were acquired by prominent collectors, including G. Kostaki. The artist continued to create art after 1986, even after being institutionalized in a neuropsychiatric facility, where he passed away while critically ill.
