Vasilij Romanenkov (1953 - 2013)

Vasilij Romanenkov was born in 1953 in Begdanivka a region of Russia where many old traditions are still anchored. During his youth, Romanenkov devoted himself to art, and especially to the practice of drawing. His works have as main subject the different stages of life such as birth, baptism, marriage, funeral. The religious is very present in his work, just like human rituals and tradition.

The main characteristic of his work is his technique of drawing by pencil strokes of different intensities, creating the so particular texture of Romanenkov's works. In addition, his style is often compared to archaic art.

His drawings won the Grand Prix at the International Naïve Art Triennial in Bratislava in 2004. Vasilij Romanenkov died in 2013 at the age of 59.

The artist never signs his works.
