Biography

A leading exponent of the Tachisme movement in Switzerland, Rolf Iseli is one of the most famous Swiss artists of the second half of the 20th century. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and his relationships with Sam Francis and Barnett Newman, Iseli devoted his early career to colorful, gestural paintings lacking any semblance of premeditation or structured approach. Discarding the purely abstract idiom later on, Iseli would create cast iron sculptures, etchings, lithographs, and prints that depicted earth, honeycombs, straw, and other natural forms evocative of figure and landscape.
