Biography

Poren Huang (黃柏仁) is a Taiwanese contemporary artist born in 1970 in Taichung, Taiwan. Coming from a family of several generations of wood sculptors, he grew up in an environment deeply marked by craftsmanship, material, and manual creation. His grandfather and parents worked in the field of wood sculpture, a family tradition that has permanently influenced his artistic approach and his relationship with form. He studied at the Fu-Hsin Trade & Arts School in Taipei, where he graduated in 1989, before developing a personal practice situated between contemporary sculpture, craft, and conceptual research.

Poren Huang's practice is part of a reflection on the relationship between man, nature, and human behaviors. His early works are particularly interested in the indigenous cultures of Taiwan, where he studies ways of life and symbolic force. Gradually, the artist develops a personal sculptural language mixing bronze, stainless steel, wood, fiberglass, and composite materials. His sculptures are distinguished by clean lines, dynamic forms, and an aesthetic influenced by comics, popular culture, and a contemporary approach to figuration.

Starting in 2003, Poren Huang has made the dog a central motif of his creation with the emblematic series « The Dog's Notes ». Inspired by his personal experience with dogs in Taiwan, this series goes beyond simple animal representation to become a philosophical reflection on modern society, human emotions, and fundamental values such as loyalty, trust, and freedom. Through anthropomorphic dog sculptures, the artist explores the similarities between animal and human behaviors, while developing a universe that is at once humorous, sensitive, and deeply symbolic.

Recognized as an important figure in Asian contemporary sculpture, Poren Huang has participated in many international exhibitions and art events since the 1990s. In 2001, he participated in the Graz International Sculpture Exhibition in Austria. He also participates in several international art fairs, including Art Taipei, contributing to the dissemination of contemporary Taiwanese sculpture on the global stage. His works are included in several institutional collections, including those of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, which preserves some of his major sculptures such as « Happy Time » (2006) and « Wise Man » (2008). His work « The Archer » has also been published in textbooks for Taiwanese high school students.

Among his remarkable exhibitions and projects are « Emotion of Track » at the Sculpture Museum of Miaoli (2001), « The Dog's Notes – Huang Poren Sculpture Exhibition » at the Taichung County Cultural Center (2005), as well as several international presentations in Europe and Asia. His works have also been shown in galleries and fairs such as London Art Fair, PAN Amsterdam, as well as in solo exhibitions in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States.

Through a work where contemporary sculpture, heritage of Taiwanese wood sculpture, observation of life, and philosophical reflection meet, Poren Huang constructs an immediately recognizable artistic universe. His animal characters, especially his humanized dogs, embody a poetic vision of the human condition and attest to a constant search for balance between humor, emotion, and conceptual depth. Today, he is considered one of the major artists of Taiwanese contemporary sculpture, appreciated for his original creations that combine traditional know-how, plastic innovation, and universal storytelling.
