Louise Janin

Born in Durham in 1893 and died in Meudon in 1997, Louise Janin was an American artist and poet who lived and worked in Paris from 1923.
Her work is influenced by Far Eastern spirituality and is close to the Symbolist and Musicalist movements, particularly those of Kupka. The concept of rhythm is central to Louise Janin's artistic approach.
Close to the Musicalist movement, she sought to transcribe a form of visual musicality, conveyed through the interplay of lines, curves, and vibrations.
Louise Janin's work is also imbued with profound spiritual reflection. Nourished by Buddhism, Taoism, and Asian art, she developed a personal iconography without adhering to any particular doctrine.
From the 1950s onward, Louise Janin developed a technique she called "cosmogram." These abstract works, created using mixed media, are based on a subtle alchemy between material effects, fluidity, colors and controlled random intervention.
